National Library Automation & Resource Sharing Network (N-LARN)

The aim of the project is to develop a national union database (Union Catalogue) of resources in libraries of higher educational institutions with focus on library resources in colleges and training of library professionals in library automation. The entire project is funded and supported by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India under its National Mission for Education through ICT (NMEICT)programme. Under the project series of workshops are being conducted in various parts of the country to train LIS professionals to use appropriate library automation software (KOHA) and relevant standards such as MARC 21. The workshops provide hands-on-training to participants to enable them to implement the software and standards in their respective institutions. The participating institutions are expected to provide bibliographic data for resources available in their libraries to populate the union database. The bibliographic data received from participating institutions will be edited, updated and made available on a centralised server as part of the union database. Libraries participating in the project will also be able to download standard records from the union database to hasten the process of automating their libraries. The project also supports libraries without adequate infrastructure to use the centralised facility for automating their libraries.
